Florence to Naples by Train: Booking Late Costs 56 Euros More
Updated 27 October 2026 · Fares, times and service counts from Trenitalia’s own booking system

What the journey costs, and when
Everything about the price of this route is decided before you reach the station. The train itself barely varies: it is three hours, it leaves roughly every half hour, and every one of the direct services is the same type of train. What moves is the fare, and it moves by a factor of nearly three.
| Booked | Departure date | Cheapest direct | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same day | 27 October | 86.00 € | The worst price on the board |
| Next day | 28 October | 86.00 € | No better than walking up |
| 3 days | 30 October | 58.90 € | The first real drop |
| 1 week | 3 November | 35.90 € | Most of the saving is already here |
| 2 weeks | 10 November | 29.90 € | The floor |
| 1 month | 26 November | 29.90 € | No further drop |
| 7 weeks | 15 December | 29.90 € | Still the floor |
| 2 months | 26 December | 42.90 € | Christmas week, not a late booking |
| 4 months | 24 February | 29.90 € | Back to the floor |
Two things in that table are worth separating. The first is that the saving is almost all gone by two weeks out. A week ahead gets you to 35.90 and a fortnight gets you to 29.90, and after that the number stops. Thirty days, seven weeks and four months all returned the same 29.90. Booking six months ahead is not cheaper than booking a fortnight ahead, it is just earlier.
The second is that 26 December is not a counterexample. That date came back at 42.90 rather than 29.90 despite being two months out, because it is Christmas week. A clean Tuesday seven weeks out was 29.90. The curve is about demand on the day you travel, not only about how far ahead you click.
Day trip or overnight
Naples is three hours away, which puts it right on the edge of a day trip. Six hours of train for one day on the ground is a real cost, and it is worth doing the arithmetic before committing to it rather than after.
Take the 08:48 and you are at Napoli Centrale at 11:48. The last direct back leaves Naples at 20:30 and reaches Florence at 23:20. That is eight hours and forty minutes in the city, which sounds generous until you subtract the time out to Pompeii and back, or the time it takes to reach the Amalfi coast at all. It covers Pompeii properly, or the centre of Naples properly. It does not cover both, and it puts you back in Florence near midnight.
Two nights changes the sum completely, because the 29.90 each way is a fixed cost whichever you do. If the trip is already tight on days in Florence, the honest answer is usually to leave Naples for a different trip rather than to compress it into one.
What to do with the afternoon you arrive
If you do come down on a morning train, the thing the timetable actually supports is Pompeii in the afternoon. The 08:48 gets you in at 11:48, and the tours that leave at 13:15 pick up on the square outside the station, which is close enough to walk with a bag. The 10:30 departures do not work from that train, and the 08:30 ones do not work from any train that started in Florence that morning.

Pompeii Guided Premium Tour From Naples
Four things before the good part. The live guide is replaced by an audioguide if fewer than six people book, the operator requires a minimum of two people per booking, it can cancel the departure outright for insufficient travellers, and the itinerary includes a stop at a cameo workshop before the ruins, which is a shop. With those on the table: it is 63 euros for a licensed archaeology guide, two hours inside the site, the Pompeii entrance fee and the coach from Naples, and the 13:15 departure picks up at Piazza Garibaldi, the square outside Napoli Centrale, at 13:30. The 08:48 Frecciarossa from Florence arrives at 11:48, and the 09:14 arrives at 12:13, so either of them makes that departure comfortably.
Every direct train on one midweek day
Here is the middle of the day, which is the part most people book. Each of these is a Frecciarossa with no change, from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Napoli Centrale.
| Departs | Arrives | Journey | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:48 | 11:48 | 3h 00 | 29.90 € |
| 09:14 | 12:13 | 2h 59 | 29.90 € |
| 09:48 | 12:48 | 3h 00 | 29.90 € |
| 10:14 | 13:15 | 3h 01 | 29.90 € |
| 10:59 | 14:08 | 3h 09 | 35.90 € |
| 11:14 | 14:13 | 2h 59 | 62.90 € |
| 11:59 | 15:03 | 3h 04 | 29.90 € |
| 12:14 | 15:13 | 2h 59 | 35.90 € |
| 13:14 | 16:21 | 3h 07 | 62.90 € |
| 14:14 | 17:18 | 3h 04 | 45.90 € |
| 15:48 | 18:48 | 3h 00 | 29.90 € |
| 16:14 | 19:13 | 2h 59 | 29.90 € |
| 17:48 | 20:48 | 3h 00 | 29.90 € |
| 18:48 | 21:48 | 3h 00 | 29.90 € |
| 20:48 | 23:48 | 3h 00 | 29.90 € |
The pair worth staring at is 11:14 and 11:59. They arrive fifty minutes apart, take the same two hours fifty-nine, and cost 62.90 and 29.90. The same gap appears again at 13:14. Nothing about the train is different. If your plans can absorb an hour either way, checking the departures around the one you wanted is worth thirty-three euros a head.
The slow trains cost more, not less
The instinct on Italian railways is that the regional trains are the budget option and the high speed ones are the splurge. On this route that is upside down, and it is upside down by a wide margin.
| Service | Journey | Changes | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Frecciarossa | 3h 00 | 0 | 29.90 € |
| Regionale plus Intercity | 5h 52 | 1 | 27.60 € |
| Regionale Veloce plus Intercity | 6h 15 | 1 | 42.65 € |
| Regionale Veloce plus Regionale | 7h 26 | 1 | 38.60 € |
| Regionale Veloce x2 plus Intercity | 8h 01 | 2 | 47.55 € |
| Regionale Veloce x2 plus Regionale | 9h 16 | 2 | 44.85 € |
| Regionale, Regionale, a bus, Regionale | 13h 11 | 3 | 38.60 € |
| Overnight, Regionale plus two Intercity | 8h 00 | 2 | 71.10 € |
The cheapest fare on the whole board, 27.60 euros, buys you five hours and fifty-two minutes and one change. For two euros and thirty cents more you arrive in three hours with no change. Every other slow combination costs more than the fast train, and the thirteen hour itinerary with a bus in the middle of it costs 38.60. The most expensive ticket of the entire day, 71.10 euros, is an overnight that takes eight hours.
So there is no money-saving slow route here, only a slow route. If the budget is the constraint, the lever is the booking date, not the train.
Italo against Trenitalia
Italo runs the same spine and nearly every discussion of this route ignores it. Its own route page gives the figures below.
| Operator | Direct services | Journey | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trenitalia | 25 direct | 2h 59 to 3h 39 | 29.90 € floor, measured |
| Italo | 21 daily | 2h 42 fastest | 23.90 € lead-in, published |
Those two columns are not the same kind of number and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Ours is a measured fare for a specific train on a specific day. Italo’s 23.90 is a lead-in price, the lowest it advertises, and on any given departure it may be nothing like that. What the comparison does establish is that Italo is on this route in volume, that it publishes a faster time than anything Trenitalia ran on our test day, and that checking both before booking takes a minute.
Between them the two operators put 46 high speed services a day on the route. The practical consequence is that you do not need to build a day around a specific departure, which is the opposite of the Venice leg, where only fourteen of thirty-six services are direct.
If the trains show no price at all
One thing to expect, because it looks alarming and is not. On some future dates the booking system lists the direct trains normally and shows no fare next to any of them. We hit it on 20 and 25 January 2027, where fourteen direct Frecciarossa appeared with nothing in the price column, while 12 January, 3 February, 24 February and 10 March all quoted the usual 29.90.
We do not know why those two dates behave differently and we are not going to guess. What matters for you is that it is not the same thing as sold out. Try a neighbouring date to confirm the route is priced at all, and come back to yours later.
Questions
How long does the train from Florence to Naples take?
About three hours on a direct Frecciarossa. Across a full midweek day we counted 25 direct Trenitalia services running between 2 hours 59 minutes and 3 hours 39 minutes, with most of them at exactly 3 hours. Italo publishes 2 hours 42 minutes for its own fastest service on the route. Anything with a change takes between 5 hours 52 minutes and 13 hours 11 minutes.
How much is a train ticket from Florence to Naples?
It depends almost entirely on when you buy it rather than which train you take. Querying Trenitalia's booking system on 27 October 2026, the cheapest direct Frecciarossa cost 86.00 euros for that same day and for the next day, 35.90 euros a week out, and 29.90 euros a fortnight out. The 29.90 figure held at thirty days, forty-nine days and four months, so it is the floor rather than a staging post.
How far ahead should I book the Florence to Naples train?
About two weeks. The fare stops falling at fourteen days and does not drop any further after that, which matches what the same booking system does on the Rome route. Booking earlier than a fortnight buys you seat choice and certainty rather than a lower price, and over holidays it does not even buy the floor: a departure on 26 December was 42.90 euros rather than 29.90, because the date is in demand and not because the booking was late.
Is there a cheap slow train from Florence to Naples?
Not really, and this is the thing worth knowing. The cheapest fare of the whole day, 27.60 euros, was a Regionale plus Intercity combination taking 5 hours 52 minutes. That is 2.30 euros less than the three hour direct train. Most of the other slow combinations cost more than the Frecciarossa, up to 47.55 euros for eight hours and three changes.
Can I do Naples as a day trip from Florence?
You can, and it is six hours of train for it. The 08:48 from Florence arrives at 11:48 and the last direct back leaves Napoli Centrale at 20:30, reaching Florence at 23:20, so you get eight hours and forty minutes on the ground and a late night. That covers Pompeii properly or the centre of Naples properly. It does not cover both.
Which station do the trains use?
Firenze Santa Maria Novella at the Florence end and Napoli Centrale at the Naples end. Both are the main central stations and both put you on foot in the middle of the city. Napoli Centrale sits on Piazza Garibaldi, which is where most organised tours of Pompeii pick up.
