New Year’s Eve in Florence: It Is Free, and the Line-Up You Are Reading Is Last Year’s
Updated 20 October 2026 · Programme and free entry from the city of Florence’s own press releases · Ordinance dates from the reporting of each year’s signing

Two things decide a New Year trip to Florence, and both of them are usually reported wrong. The city’s celebration is free, and the line-up you are reading in October belongs to last year.
The second one is not a complaint about other people. It is a fact about how the event is organised, and it comes with a date attached.
The city’s New Year is free
Florence’s own press office describes the night as a large free music event promoted by the city, spread across central squares, and its culture councillor put it as music, culture and free entertainment in the heart of the city. That is the main event. It is not a warm-up for a ticketed one.
| Square | What the city puts on there | Entry |
|---|---|---|
| Piazza della Signoria | Light show on the Palazzo Vecchio, and the midnight countdown | Free |
| Piazza Santa Croce | The main entertainment stage | Free |
| Santissima Annunziata | Gospel, under the Innocenti loggia | Free |
| Piazza del Carmine | Jazz | Free |
This matters because there are businesses selling “New Year’s Eve in Florence” as a ticketed product, and what they are selling is a private dinner or a party in a venue. That can be a perfectly good night. It is simply not the thing the city is putting on, and the comparison you should be making is against something that costs nothing.
Why nobody can tell you the line-up yet
Here is the part that explains everything you will read between now and Christmas. The city chooses the programme through an open call for proposals that closes on 15 December. Organisers submit, the council selects and funds, and only then is there a line-up to publish.
| When | What exists | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Through the autumn | Nothing published | Anything with names in it is from a previous year |
| 15 December | Call for proposals closes | The city is still choosing acts at this point |
| Mid to late December | Programme announced | This is the first date the line-up exists |
| Late December | Firework and glass ordinance signed | Also an annual, last-minute thing |
So a page naming performers in October is describing a previous edition. The names in circulation right now come from reporting dated 18 December 2025, and earlier editions had different ones again.
What is stable is the shape, not the cast. Four or five central squares, music of several kinds, free entry, a light show on the Palazzo Vecchio and fireworks at midnight. If you are deciding whether to come, decide on that. If you want to know who is playing, the answer arrives in the second half of December and not before.
The firework ban is not what it sounds like
You will see it stated that Florence has banned fireworks on New Year’s Eve. You will also see photographs of fireworks over the Arno at midnight. Both are right, because they are two different things.
- Private fireworks and firecrackers are banned for the night by a mayoral ordinance covering the whole comune. In recent years it has run from either 17:00 or 19:00 on 31 December to 07:00 on 1 January, and it has usually come with a ban on glass containers in the centre at the same time.
- The city’s own midnight display over the Arno is organised, and is not what the ordinance is about.
The practical version: do not bring your own, because possession alone is covered, and do not assume there will be nothing to watch.
One honest caveat. The ordinance is signed fresh each year, usually in the last days of December, and it has not been identical every time. Treat the hours above as the recent pattern rather than as this year’s rule, and check once it is signed.
What the free night actually costs you
Free is the right word for the entry and the wrong word for the evening, so here is what you are actually signing up for.
- It is outdoors in a Florentine midnight. One December night in five is at or below freezing, which we counted in our guide to Florence in December. You will be standing still for a lot of it.
- Capacity, not tickets, is the limit. The squares are free until they are full, and they have been closed on the night before now when they filled.
- Getting home is the real cost. The limited traffic zone is switched on through the night, taxis are famously hard to find after midnight on the 31st, and the late buses stop at around half past two.
None of that makes the paid options better value. It makes them comparable, which they are not when the free night is described as though it has no downsides. If you want to be sitting down, indoors and certain of a place, that is what you are buying, and it is worth knowing that is what you are buying.
If that is the trade you want to make, the thing to book is an early evening that feeds you and then gives you back. Both of these run from around sunset and finish well before midnight, so you eat sitting down and still get the squares for free.

Florence Sunset Food & Wine Tour, Oltrarno
Not a New Year product: this is the operator's regular evening tour, and it showed up as running on 31 December when we searched. It is here because the timing solves the problem this page describes. Three and a half hours from sunset, nine or ten tastings, four wines and gelato, starting and finishing in Piazza Santo Spirito, which puts you back out with hours to spare before midnight. Minimum two people, and the refund drops to zero inside 24 hours.

Florence Street Food Walking Tour, Duomo area
The cheap version of the same idea, and shorter at two and a half hours. We flag the review count rather than hide it: 122 is thin next to the 6,216 on the one above, so the rating is less settled. Also not a New Year product. Worth it if you want something in your stomach before standing in a cold square and do not want to spend 109 euros doing it.
1 January is the day everything shuts
This catches people who have planned the night and not the morning after. The Uffizi and the Galleria dell’Accademia both close on 1 January, the same as on 25 December.
So a New Year trip should put the galleries on 30 December or 2 January and treat the 1st as a walking day. The opening hours and closures for both are in our guides to Uffizi tickets and what to book before you arrive, and the Monday problem is worth reading alongside them, because a 1 January that falls near a Monday can take two gallery days out of a short trip.
What we have not checked
- We have not been in Florence for New Year. Nothing here describes the atmosphere, the crowd or whether you will enjoy it.
- We have priced no New Year parties or gala dinners. The two evening tours above are ordinary products that run on the night, checked on Viator on 20 October 2026, not New Year packages. The ticketed New Year events sold by venues and hotels we have not checked at all, so we name none of them.
- This year’s ordinance does not exist yet. The hours we give are the recent pattern from the reporting of previous signings, not a rule in force for the coming 31 December.
- Restaurant opening on 1 January. We say many open for dinner because that is the general pattern, and we have not surveyed any, so book rather than assume.
Questions
Do you need tickets for New Year’s Eve in Florence?
Not for the city’s own celebration. Florence puts on what its press office calls a large free music event across four central squares, with a light show on the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria, a stage in Santa Croce, gospel at Santissima Annunziata and jazz at the Carmine. Entry is free and the limit is capacity rather than a ticket. There are also private parties and hotel dinners that sell tickets, and some of them market themselves as the Florence New Year, which is a different thing from the city event.
What is the programme for New Year’s Eve in Florence 2026?
It does not exist yet, and there is a structural reason rather than a vague one. The city selects the acts through an open call for proposals that closes on 15 December, so the line-up is only announced in the second half of December. Any page naming performers before then is describing a previous year: the names in wide circulation at the moment, Tiromancino and Paola Iezzi, come from coverage dated 18 December 2025. What is stable year to year is the shape: four or five central squares, music, free entry, a light show on the Palazzo Vecchio and fireworks at midnight.
Are fireworks banned in Florence on New Year’s Eve?
Private ones usually are, and that is not the same as the city display being cancelled. Florence signs an ordinance most years banning the possession and setting off of fireworks and firecrackers across the whole comune for the night, running from either 17:00 or 19:00 on 31 December to 07:00 on 1 January, and it normally bans glass containers in the centre at the same time. The municipal fireworks over the Arno at midnight are a separate, organised thing. So you should not bring your own, and you will still see a display.
What is open in Florence on 1 January?
Not the museums. The Uffizi and the Galleria dell’Accademia both close on 1 January, as they do on 25 December, so a trip built around a New Year in Florence should put the galleries on 30 December or 2 January rather than the 1st. Restaurants are a different matter and many open for dinner, though New Year’s Day lunch is quieter than you might expect. Plan the 1st as a walking day.
Is New Year’s Eve in Florence worth it?
It depends on whether crowds in cold squares are your idea of a night out, because that is what it is: free, outdoors, busy, and finished by about two in the morning when the last buses go. What you are not paying for is the thing itself. If you want a seated dinner and a guaranteed spot, that is a private booking and it is a separate cost, and the honest comparison is against a night that costs nothing.
